Dividing numbers with up to 4 digits by multiples of 10

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can divide numbers with up to 4 digits by multiples of 10

Key learning points

  1. If the dividend and divisor are both scaled by the same amount, the quotient will remain the same.
  2. If you divide the dividend and the divisor by 10, the quotient will remain the same.
  3. Skip counting in multiples of the divisor can help you solve problems.

Keywords

  • Dividend - The dividend is the amount that you want to divide.

  • Divisor - A divisor is the number we divide by.

  • Multiple - A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number.

  • Quotient - A quotient is the result after division has taken place.

Common misconception

Pupils may make mistakes converting from km into m or kg in g.

Pupils may need supporting converting units and multiplying by one thousand. Place value charts may be needed here.

Teacher tip

Pupils need to understand that division is the inverse of multiplication. Encourage pupils to be flexible in their methods of calculation. Dividing both the dividend and divisor by 10 are very useful, but pupils can also use halving strategies to divide by 2, 4 or 8
