Lesson details
Key learning points
- Understanding the scale of a number line helps to estimate and identify numbers on it.
- To determine the multiples that the number line increases in, take the whole and divide it by the number of parts.
- Locating the midpoint on a number line or between multiples helps to estimate.
Keywords
Estimate - When we estimate, we find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved.
Midpoint - The midpoint is the middle of something - in this case the middle of a number line. It is the point halfway along.
Common misconception
Children may incorrectly place a number on a number line according to just counting the parts rather than working out the scale.
Determine the multiples that the number line is increasing in first: find the difference between the given start and end numbers and divide by the number of parts.
