Explain the relationship between pairs of 3 and 9 times table facts that have the same product

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain the relationship between pairs of 3 and 9 times table facts that have the same product.

      Key learning points

      1. In a multiple of nine, there are three times as many threes as nines.
      2. 1 group of 9 is equal to 3 groups of 3

      Keywords

      • Multiple - A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number.

      Common misconception

Lack of fluency in the 3s and 9s times tables can lead to pupils being slower to grasp the generalisation about the relationship between the 3 and 9 times tables.

Model using arrays and other representations. Pupils who may struggle to triple / find one third of a number may require more time to work through calculations. Multiplication grids could also be provided while pupils become more fluent in recall.

      Teacher tip

By this point fluency in 3 and 9 times tables will support children in solving these problems. Continue to chorally rehearse the 3 and 9 times tables.
