Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. There are three times as many threes as nines.
  2. We can say that triple three is equal to nine.
  3. Triple means 'three times'.

Keywords

  • Multiple - A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number.

  • Triple - To triple means to become three times as many or to multiply by three.

Common misconception

Lack of fluency in the 3s and 9s times tables can lead to pupils being slower to grasp the generalisation about the relationship between the 3 and 9 times tables.

Model using arrays and other representations. Pupils who may struggle to triple / find one third of a number may require more time to work through calculations. Multiplication grids could also be provided while pupils become more fluent in recall.

By this point fluency in 3 and 9 times tables will support children in solving these problems. Continue to chorally rehearse the 3 and 9 times tables.
