Lesson details
Key learning points
- Place value equipment represents 3-digit numbers efficiently.
- A 3-digit number is made out of hundreds, tens and ones.
- The position of the digit tells you its place value.
Keywords
Represent - Represent means showing something, or standing for something.
3-digit number - A 3-digit number represents a number of hundreds, tens and ones.
Place value - Place value means how much a digit is worth in a number.
Common misconception
Pupils may struggle to represent numbers where tens or ones are missing (e.g. 307 or 680).
Use place value grids to represent numbers, showing that there are 'no tens' or 'no ones'. Use alongside base ten block representations.
Most pupils will find base ten blocks very useful in this lesson. They can be used alongside place value grids to represent 3-digit numbers.
