Lesson details
Key learning points
- Equal parts of the same-sized whole may not look the same - they can be different shapes.
- A whole can be made from equal-sized parts that are different shapes.
- Each equal part of a whole must represent the same amount of the whole.
Keywords
Equal - We say that two or more things are equal if they have the same quantity or value.
Unequal - We say that two or more things are unequal if they do not have the same quantity or value.
Common misconception
Children might think that parts are unequal just because they look different.
If you cut the shapes out, do they take up the same amount of space?
Doing as well as seeing is essential here. Get the children cutting and proving wherever possible. Take every opportunity throughout the day to point out equal and unequal parts e.g. in groupings in PE lessons.
