Common misconception

Pupils may not see the connection between known facts and calculating using multiples of one hundred.

Place value counters or Base 10 blocks may be helpful with getting children to unitise and see the connection between, for example, 14 − 7 and 1,400 − 700

Pupils may find number lines helpful for this session (number lines counting in multiples of 100 up to 2,000), Pupils could use ten frames and place value counters instead. Encourage pupils to discuss strategies for calculating subtraction with multiples of 100, especially with numbers over 1000
