Represent 3-digit multiples of 10 in different ways

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can represent 3-digit multiples of 10 in different ways.

      Key learning points

      1. 3-digit multiples of ten can be expressed as a number of tens.
      2. 3-digit multiples of ten can be expressed as a number of hundreds and tens.
      3. The number of tens and the number of hundreds and tens are equivalent.

      Keywords

      • Equal - Exactly the same amount or value.

      Common misconception

Pupils should not be encouraged to think about 'adding a zero' to the 2-digit numbers.

Make careful use of the stem sentences and representations to make sure that pupils are clear that e.g. 12 tens is equal to 120.

      Teacher tip

This lesson provides the opportunity to link a number of tens with a 3-digit multiple of ten by saying that, for example, 14 tens is equal to 140. This then helps pupils to apply known facts to 20 to 3-digit multiples of ten.
