Describe and represent hundredths as a decimal number

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe and represent hundredths as a decimal number.

      Key learning points

      1. If a digit is moved one column to the right it becomes one tenth the size.
      2. One hundredth is one tenth the size of one tenth.
      3. Hundredths are recorded in the column to the right of the tenths so one tenth is 0.01

      Keywords

      • Hundredth - The name we give to one part of one hundred equal parts.

      • One hundredth the size - When a whole is divided into one hundred equal parts, we can say one of those parts is one hundredth the size of the whole.

      • Hundredths column - The hundredths column places the number of hundredths a given number has.

      Common misconception

Pupils may record two-digit hundredth values incorrectly. For example 12 hundredths as 0.012

Use place value counters to represent the number and demonstrate the regrouping of ten hundredths.

      Teacher tip

Make sure pupils have time to use the language of 'one hundredth the size' and 'one hundred times smaller' interchangeably. You might like to give time to pupils moving digits within a place value chart to combine language and operation.
