Lesson details
Key learning points
- The whole is divided into one hundred equal parts and one of them is one hundredth of the whole.
- There are 100 hundredths in one whole.
- There are 10 hundredths in one tenth.
Keywords
Equal - Exactly the same amount or value.
Hundredth - One part of one hundred equal parts.
Tenth - One part of ten equal parts.
Common misconception
Pupils may only attribute one hundredth to an area model being broken into one hundred equal parts.
Ensure pupils see one hundredth in both linear and cardinal examples too.
Encourage pupils to decompose, then re-compose a whole into one ten equal parts. Follow this by breaking each tenth down into another ten equal parts. This will support pupils to get a sense for the size of one hundredth in comparison to the whole.
