      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can identify tenths as part of a whole.

      Key learning points

      1. The whole is divided into ten equal parts and one of the parts is one tenth of the whole.
      2. There are ten tenths in one whole.
      3. One whole can be divided into ten tenths.

      Keywords

      • Equal - Equal means exactly the same amount or value.

      • Tenth - A tenth is the name we give to one part of ten equal parts.

      Common misconception

Pupils think one tenth consists of one shaded part and ten un-shaded parts.

Encourage children to use the stem sentence to identify the whole and how many parts make it up each time.

      Teacher tip

Focus on providing children with the opportunity to generalise what one tenth is in lots of different contexts. It is important that they see it in area, linear and quantity examples.
