Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. To convert from percent to a fraction, start by converting each percentage into a fraction with a denominator of 100
  2. Use factor pairs to help you identify the highest common factor.
  3. The percentage parts always add together to be equal to 100%

Keywords

  • Convert - Convert means to change from one form to another.

  • Percent - Percent means the number of parts in each hundred.

  • Percentage - A percentage is a proportion of a whole.

Common misconception

Pupils may find simplifying fractions difficult and understanding that they first need to identify the highest common factor.

Model writing out fraction pairs and finding the highest common factor. Have worked examples displayed for pupils to reference.

Again to support access throughout this lesson, you may wish to develop speed of recall of percentages and their fraction equivalent (e.g. 25% and one-quarter) outside of the lesson.
