Lesson details
Key learning points
- If the dividend and divisor are both scaled by 10, the quotient will remain the same.
- Place value and unitising help to explain the effect on the quotient when scaling the dividend and divisor by 10
- If 6 divided by 3 is equal to 2 then 6 tens divided by 3 tens is equal to 2
Keywords
Dividend - The dividend is the amount that you want to divide.
Divisor - A divisor is the number we divide by.
Quotient - A quotient is the result after division has taken place. It is the whole number part.
Common misconception
It's important that pupils avoid saying, 'ten times smaller' to avoid misconceptions around the structure of division.
Describe relationships by saying, 'divide by ten', or referring to the amounts involved e.g. 'The dividend is seven hundred. It is divided by ten. The dividend is now seventy.'
