Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Knowledge of perimeter and area is useful for any space management contexts.
  2. Knowledge of perimeter and area is useful when costing a project.
  3. For each context, you need to decide whether perimeter or area is relevant.

Keywords

  • Perimeter - The perimeter is the distance around a 2D shape.

  • Area - The area is the size of the surface and states the number of unit squares needed to completely cover that surface.

Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to select the correct process of perimeter or area.

Pupils should consider whether a space is to be covered in which case it is most likely area.

Task B could be completed in pairs/groups and could also have a budget added to it so that pupils need to consider their choices a little more closely. Also, many DIY websites have calculators in built to work out how much material is needed based on measurements.
