Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can hold my part with confidence in a performance, singing at the right time with accuracy and a steady pulse.

Key learning points

  1. It is important to warm up before a performance as it helps us to feel like we’re performing as an ensemble.
  2. Rehearsing helps us feel confident and prepared, so we are ready to perform our best.
  3. Watching the conductor is important because they help us follow the steady pulse and keep us together in time.
  4. Performances should be engaging and accurate because we want the audience to see the best work we can do.

Keywords

  • Rehearse - to practise in order to improve and prepare for performance

  • Pulse - the regular, steady heartbeat of the music

  • Performance - presenting our work in front of others

  • Conductor - a person who directs musicians or singers

  • Audience - a group of people listening to or watching our performance

Common misconception

If we've rehearsed our songs, we don't need to warm up for a performance.

Warming up for a performance encourages everyone to feel engaged, connected and alert as well as supporting a good quality of vocal sound.

Teacher tip

Spending time on the warm up is useful to help generate positivity, cohesion and confidence, as well as keeping voices safe and in tune. Reminding pupils of feeling the sense of pulse will support listening and keeping in time, and will increase the chances of a successful performance.
