Lesson details
Key learning points
- Move: when throwing the javelin, have feet shoulder width apart, the javelin held above the shoulder pointing forwards.
- Move: take the arm back and release the javelin when it passes the shoulder, extending the arm up and away.
- Think: focusing on our throwing technique, rather than power, can help us to throw further.
- Feel: we can demonstrate resilience by continuing to try and improve our technique, using our partner's feedback.
- Connect: communicating feedback clearly and listening to our own feedback shows that we trust and respect each other.
Keywords
Javelin - a long, pointed spear-like tool used in an athletic event called the javelin throw
Technique - the method we use to perform a task
Feedback - giving helpful and constructive comments about someone's performance or work
Common misconception
Pupils grip the javelin tightly in their hand, thinking that this will help them to throw it further, however this can hinder a smooth release and lead to tension in the rest of the arm.
Pupils should place the javelin across their palm with their fingers wrapped around it, but not too tight. Explain to pupils that a more relaxed grip will result in a smoother release and longer throw.
