Create sequences in unison on apparatus with symmetrical balances
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can create a sequence in unison, on the apparatus, that includes symmetrical balances, incorporating quality actions and fluidity throughout.
Key learning points
- Move: moving with fluidity throughout the sequence requires accurate timing with no pauses between actions.
- Move: executing quality movements in unison, with control and extension in and out of balances, requires flow.
- Think: resourcefulness enables us to select the best movements and symmetrical balances to include in the sequence.
- Connect: remaining in unison through the sequence requires effective collaboration to ensure we have accurate timing.
- Feel: rehearsing the sequence to improve the fluidity and accurate timing throughout requires self-discipline.
Keywords
Unison - performing the same movement at exactly the same time as our partner
Accurate timing - performing movements and balances at the exact time you planned or expected
Fluidity - moving from one action to another without stopping
Common misconception
Pupils use the floor to create their linking movements in unison and move around the apparatus instead of using it.
Explain to pupils that the apparatus is there to be used and that we can really enhance our creativity if we try and include a range of apparatus in our movements.
Teacher tip
Give pupils lots of time to practise their movements in unison on a range of apparatus.
Equipment
mats, benches, gymnastic tables, climbing frames or wall bars

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
