Performing meditative balances incorporating mindfulness techniques

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use meditative balances effectively to improve my posture, body awareness, focus and concentration, and can use mindfulness techniques to help manage negative emotions.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: to hold our meditative balances consistently, slow deep breathing and a strong posture help us remain still.
      2. Move: taking deep breaths in and out, while focusing on positive emotions, enables us to feel calm and relaxed.
      3. Think: meditative balances improve our focus on the positive, enabling us to relax and improve strength and flexibility.
      4. Feel: self-motivation helps us focus on positive emotions, calming our bodies.
      5. Connect: when working with others, we have to trust one another to use relaxation methods more effectively.

      Keywords

      • Balance - maintain stability and control over the body's position to remain stationary

      • Meditative - being very calm, quiet and focused

      • Relaxation - when your body and mind feel calm and peaceful

      Common misconception

Pupils rush their deep breathing, which reduces the impact of the technique.

Explain to pupils that it’s important not to rush deep breathing, otherwise they won’t be able to focus their minds and the technique won’t work.

      Teacher tip

Use a bell to support pupils with when to start and end their mediative balances. Play clam music to create an environment that is conducive to relaxing.

      Equipment

additional materials: meditative balance cards, 1 bell
