Officiating, performing and supporting your team

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can take on a range of roles to support my team and the successful running of an athletics event.

Key learning points

  1. Move: selecting and applying the most relevant skills in relation to the activity increases the chances of success.
  2. Think: being clear on the rules and conventions of an event and communicating that to others ensures a fair competition.
  3. Feel: all forms of contributions to the event play a vital role in its success and foster a sense of achievement.
  4. Connect: accepting victory and defeat graciously helps to maintain a positive environment for all performers.

Keywords

  • Official - a person responsible for managing and overseeing the events, ensuring rules are followed and making decisions to ensure fair play and safety

  • Performer - an athlete or participant competing in events, showcasing their skills and abilities in various athletic activities

  • Sporting behaviour - demonstrating respect and good conduct before, during and after the events, regardless of the outcome

Common misconception

Poor sporting behaviour is only related to people who spectate or support the events.

Everyone involved in the competition is responsible for how they behave and showing good sporting behaviour. This includes supporters, performers and officials. Everyone's role is to ensure the event remains safe, fair and enjoyable for all.

Teacher tip

Ensure that everyone in the class has performed in a minimum of 1 and a maxiumum of 2 events in this lesson and the previous lesson.
