Pupils will already have developed the necessary core techniques for different running, jumping and throwing events. After they train to improve different aspects of fitness, pupils will contribute towards the performance of their team as they grow in confidence and challenge themselves to improve further. Later in athletics pupils will focus on pace or power whilst demonstrating increasing independence.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know that athletic activities consist of throwing, running, and jumping events that challenge speed, distance and time.
  • Pupils understand that within teams, there are roles such as coach, performer, and official.
  • Pupils are able to demonstrate changes in speed and effort when running, jumping, and throwing.
  • Pupils respond positively to feedback and are motivated to improve their personal best performances.

This unit will develop pupils’ ability to perform in a range of athletic events with a focus on personal best improvements. They will learn about different components of fitness and the difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Pupils will take responsibility for working in small teams.
