Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: keep the javelin stable and aligned with the direction of the throw, with your throwing arm extended.
  2. Move: transitioning into a side-on position crossing the legs over one another before release optimises body position.
  3. Think: adapting the warm up to include javelin specific movements is needed to help reduce the risk of muscle straining.
  4. Feel: showing persistence through repeated practice increases the distance achieved.
  5. Connect: working together to achieve a combined target demonstrates teamwork.

Keywords

  • Consistency - regularly putting in good effort and maintaining a steady approach to training and improvement over time

  • Support - being there for your teammates, helping them through challenges and celebrating their successes together

  • Crossover steps - the final steps that help transition into the throwing position

Common misconception

Strength and power are more important than technique when throwing a javelin far.

While strength and power are both important, too much strength and not enough time focusing on technique, can impact the accuracy of the throw. A well executed throw will travel further than just force alone.

Time in the lesson should be spent on technique, balanced with an understanding of how to develop power. Improvements over a lesson will come more from technique and reduce the risk of injury.
