Lindy Hop: the basic movement language

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can manipulate actions and motifs.

Key learning points

  1. Move: applying a ‘bouncy’ dynamic to an action communicates a happy mood.
  2. Think: deciding upon and recalling changes requires concentration.
  3. Feel: maintaining space from others involves self-discipline.
  4. Connect: appreciating the factors that influence a dance style requires empathy.

Keywords

  • Manipulate - change or alter

  • Social - being with others

  • Dynamic - the speed and force of an action, how it is performed

Common misconception

The steps learnt have to be performed in a set order.

In the Lindy Hop, the dancers' personal style and flair was highly prized so they would find new and inventive ways of arranging and performing the key actions seen it this style.

Teacher tip

Say the names of the actions to complement the rhythm pattern, e.g. 'kick, kick, double kick'. This not only helps the pupils to remember the actions but also supports their musicality and ability to collaborate successfully.
