Why this why now

This unit develops pupils understanding of how we can learn about a society through the arts and how they reflect and affect the norms and accepted culture of their time. Pupils will be introduced to how the dance styles studied spread in terms of their geographic reach as well shifting between fulfilling a social function into an art form. This unit builds upon the work in the ‘Everyday Art’ unit, appreciating the purposes of art. Pupils will refine their sense of aesthetics, accuracy of placement and be able to identify key stylistic qualities.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils can manipulate movement to create and vary motifs and formulate them into a dance.
  • Pupils can identify and apply stylistic features and offer reasons for their presence.
  • Pupils can reflect upon the various functions of art and their evolution.
  • Pupils can synthesise a wide range of physical skills.
  • Pupils can identify a selection of methods regarding how they might develop a motif and justify their choices.
