Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: performing quality jumps requires bending the knees, swinging the arms for height and controlling the landing.
  2. Move: a turning jump involves combining a jump with a controlled rotation of the body whilst in the air.
  3. Think: recognising quality turning jumps when observing others helps you identify strengths and areas for improvement.
  4. Feel: practising and performing new and more complex turning jumps on apparatus helps to develop self-confidence.
  5. Connect: performing turning jumps with good timing alongside a partner requires excellent communication skills.

Keywords

  • Flight - when in the air, not touching the ground or any equipment

  • Jump - pushing off the ground or equipment with our legs to go up in the air

  • Turning - changing the direction your body is facing by rotating the body around a vertical axis

Common misconception

When jumping from apparatus, pupils may rush the jump and not be balanced before they take off. Pupils may land with stiff knees or poor body position.

Always check balance and engage the core before jumping. Ensure a solid stance before jumping. Pupils should bend their knees to absorb impact on landing and make sure their weight is centered over their feet.

Always use padded landing areas which have good grip when jumping from height to help avoid injury. Pupils should gradually work from lower to higher heights to build confidence. Pupils should focus on control when jumping from apparatus.
