Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: developing body control, spatial awareness and balance within a class prevents any collisions when moving around.
  2. Move: engaging the core muscles and fixing the eyes on a spot allows more stability when balancing.
  3. Think: different levels in a gymnastics routine makes it more dynamic, visually appealing and showcases diverse skills.
  4. Feel: holding a balance requires focused concentration and muscle tension to maintain stillness.
  5. Connect: working with others to create a balance sequence needs clear communication to ensure synchronised movements.

Keywords

  • Locomotion - moving from one place to another using different ways your body can move e.g. running, jumping, skipping, hopping and rolling

  • Levels - working at different heights from sliding along the floor to crawling and right through to bounding jumps

  • Balance - maintaining the centre of mass over the base of support to avoid falling over

Common misconception

Pupils always opt to perform the most simple movements. Pupils may not like performing in front of others.

Give pupils time to develop their movement ideas and be creative. Share creative ideas to improve the quality of movements. Encourage pupils to present in pairs to build up their confidence in performing to one another.
