      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can define what success can look like in a range of competitions.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: swinging your arms will increase the distance your object is thrown.
      2. Move: the point of release will determine how high and how far your object travels toward your target.
      3. Think: establishing the aim and rules of a new activity inform tactical decisions in competition.
      4. Feel: working toward, achieving and celebrating a personal best builds confidence and self-esteem.
      5. Connect: shifting the focus away from the outcome of a competition builds stronger relationships between participants.

      Keywords

      • Personal best - achieving or surpassing individual your record

      • Teamwork - work done by a group acting together

      • Processes - actions, strategies and routines athletes follow to improve skills, maintain consistency and achieve goals

      Common misconception

Winning is the only metric of success and losing is always bad.

You can make improvements to your own/your team's performance in many different ways, regardless of the outcome of a competition.

      Teacher tip

Reduce the importance placed on winning and focus more on process goals, such as performing specific skills, implementing agreed tactics or supporting teammates.

      Equipment

1 hoop per group. 3 bean bags and 3 cones per group, timer/stopwatch.
