Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: taking a deep breath before throwing or serving relaxes the body and helps to maintain accuracy under pressure.
  2. Think: officiating with integrity and without bias in a tournament prevents conflict occurring.
  3. Feel: prioritising sporting behaviour over outcome can help to regulate emotions in competitive situations.
  4. Connect: having a metric for success that every participant is able to achieve encourages a greater sense of inclusion.

Keywords

  • Tournament - a series of competitive events or matches where teams or individuals compete against each other

  • Metric for success - the chosen method of what is deemed to be desirable in the tournament, such as, improving skills, achieving personal bests and demonstrating sporting behaviour

  • Sporting behaviour - the practice of fair play, respect and graciousness towards opponents, teammates and officials

Common misconception

All tournaments must focus solely on the outcome/winner of competition.

In order for all participants to feel included, tournaments can take many forms and be adapted so that everyone can enjoy an appropriate level of challenge.
