      Key learning points

      1. Move: performing a range of skills well throughout the game requires excellent cardiovascular fitness.
      2. Think: applying the rules, positions and tactics shows an excellent understanding of the game.
      3. Think: critical thinking skills are required to review and reflect on performances, both during and after game play.
      4. Feel: reviewing and analysing performance to try to improve shows excellent self motivation.
      5. Connect: leadership of self and others through positivity and listening to each other helps the collective performance.

      Keywords

      • Analysis - a detailed examination of the performance

      • Strategy - a plan of action or approach designed to achieve a specific goal or outcome

      • Review - a formal assessment/critical appraisal of something

      Common misconception

When playing as part of a bigger team, pupils often bunch around the ball and do not hold their shape. They can also be more static off the ball thinking that teammates will be available for a pass.

Reduce the numbers on each team, assign clear roles or freeze the play regularly to demonstrate where players should be. Focus on movement off the ball as soon as players have passed.

      Teacher tip

Based on the key learning points of the lesson, make a judgement as to whether pupils will learn more working in mixed ability groups or in ability teams.

      Equipment

1 ball per 8 pupils, approx 50 cones of various colours, small 5 a side goals (if available), bibs
