Pairs throw ball fielding games
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can throw to others and at targets with accuracy and power.
Key learning points
- Move: different situations require a range of throwing and catching techniques.
- Move: fielders backing up a teammate's throw avoids losing runs through overthrowing.
- Think: overarm throws are used for longer distances or more powerful throws, but underarm can be more accurate.
- Feel: perseverance is required when throwing for targets and becoming more accurate.
- Connect: getting opposition players out in cricket requires increased team collaboration when working under pressure.
Keywords
Accurate - reaching the intended target with precision
Target - the specific object or area you are aiming for
Backing up - positioning yourself to stop the ball if it misses the target
Common misconception
When throwing at a target, pupils will often think only of hitting the target and not the consequences of missing it - which often leads to losing more runs through overthrowing it.
Pupils understand the need to back up their teammate as they throw, and the need for the thrower to check that someone is backing up before throwing.

Wickets are used in this lesson, but lots of freestanding items could be used as bigger or smaller alternatives (bowling pins, tackle pads, buckets).
