Routines for daily flexibility and mobility

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can enhance my mobility through flexibility exercises and stretching.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: the body should be relaxed and breathing guides movement in yoga poses.
      2. Move: posture and stability are maintained by grounding down and spreading weight through all points touching the floor.
      3. Think: stretching during your training programme is crucial to feel good and prevent injuries.
      4. Feel: noticing tight or tense areas in the body helps identify where stretching is needed.
      5. Connect: partner stretching promotes connection by fostering teamwork, trust and shared progress in flexibility.

      Keywords

      • Flexibility - the range of movement available at the joint

      • Mobility - the ability to be able to move your body or body parts freely and easily

      • Stretching - gently lengthening muscles and tendons to improve elasticity and therefore mobility around the joint

      Common misconception

Flexibility training is only for dancers or gymnasts.

Flexibility training is useful for all athletes as it can improve mobility, posture and reduce muscle tension making all movements easier.

      Teacher tip

Either practice leading through the sun salutation and yoga poses in advance, or prepare 1 or 2 student leaders to lead the rest of the class.

      Equipment

1 x tennis ball per students, floor matts for comfort, music player, additional materials
