Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: sprinting requires a relaxed yet vigorous arm swing, with elbows bent at 90 degrees.
  2. Move: completing an effective warm up prepares muscles and avoids injury.
  3. Think: appreciating sprint training boosts metabolism by increasing calorie burn both during and after exercise.
  4. Feel: pushing your body hard in short bursts leaves you breathless, muscles burning, but energised and accomplished.
  5. Connect: working out together is motivating and supportive and makes the experience more enjoyable.

Keywords

  • Interval training - training alternating between high intensity periods and periods of low intensity recovery or rest

  • Warm up - a whole body exercise done before physical activity to prepare the body for exercise and reduce the risk of injury

  • Lactic acid - chemical produced by the body when it breaks down carbohydrates for energy with limited oxygen supply

Common misconception

Pupils think interval training is completed to increase speed and power only.

The rest intervals are really good to enhance stamina and cardiovascular endurance. The intense workout does develop power especially in the lower body muscles which supports injury prevention when running.
