Why this why now

Pupils will already have designed their own training programme to work on aspects of physical fitness that matter to them. This unit challenges them to work together towards common goals of improved cardiovascular endurance and the power of taking responsibility for following a prescribed programme based on current fitness levels. Later in health and wellbeing pupils will explore approaches to holistic wellbeing to include yoga, pilates and mindfulness; and exercises associated with martial arts and self-defence.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know that HIIT and working towards a 5k requires cardiovascular and muscular endurance.
  • Pupils understand that regular training and progression will result in improvements in fitness.
  • Pupils are able to appreciate the physical and psychological effect of exercise.
  • Pupils show a positive attitude towards activities that promote fitness, friendships and lifelong relationship with physical activity.
