Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: good balance and coordination are required when performing basic kicks.
  2. Move: throwing multiple punches and kicks with good technique relies on muscular endurance.
  3. Think: understanding and applying the correct technique and positioning when using pads is important.
  4. Feel: regulating your emotions and managing frustration when learning new skills demonstrates self-discipline.
  5. Connect: supporting others and providing accurate feedback can help someone progress quicker than they would do alone.

Keywords

  • Front kick - a basic striking technique that involves extending the leg forward to strike with the ball of the foot

  • Turning/roundhouse kick - a kick delivered by turning the body and pivoting on the supporting foot to strike the target with the heel or ball of the foot

  • Pad - a training tool used to absorb strikes during practice

Common misconception

Pupils hold the pads at the wrong height or angle or keep their arms too stiff or too relaxed.

Encourage pupils to communicate if the pads are at the wrong height or angle to give each other corrective feedback. Teach pad holders to “meet” the strike with slight forward pressure and a bend in the arms.
