Key learning points
- Move: stick is held with the left hand at the top of the grip and the right hand lower down for greater control.
- Move: low crouch with bent knees, body leaning slightly forward and head up to see spaces/players.
- Think: the stick is kept in close contact with the ball when dribbling.
- Feel: passing accurately with the reverse stick consistently requires persistence and practice.
- Connect: making eye contact and communicating where you want the ball passed to helps reduce accuracy errors.
Keywords
Push pass - used to move the ball quickly and accurately over short distances where stick stays in contact with the ball until it is released
Reverse stick - because you can only touch the ball with the flat side of the stick, you need to rotate the stick round using a loose grip with your bottom hand
Indian dribble - pushing the ball from left to right and back rapidly
Common misconception
When dribbling the ball eyes should always be down looking at the ball.
Whilst it's important to control the ball, always looking down means you can't see what's happening in the game. Keeping the head up improves decision-making, allowing players to see defenders, find passing options and spaces to dribble into.
