Why this why now

Pupils will already have developed ways to adapt skills, tactics and strategies from various forms of football but this unit places an implement in their hand which adds an extra dimension of challenge. This unit provides an opportunity to transfer some knowledge and skills from racket sports as well as other field games in terms of movement off the ball, creating space and outwitting opponents. Later in invasion games they will apply more advanced tactics and strategies.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know that higher levels of challenge in tasks can support greater internal motivation to achieve.
  • Pupils understand how to create space using width, depth and movement off the ball.
  • Pupils are able to demonstrate basic hockey skills under control such as passing, dribbling and tackling.
  • Pupils show emotional intelligence to help them communicate effectively in a team.
