Short and long corners
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can take part in both short and long corners to help my team attack the goal.
Key learning points
- Move: having the front foot wide and pointing to the target as the injector improves the speed and accuracy of the pass.
- Move: an auto pass can allow for a quicker restart to catch the opposition off guard.
- Think: a long corner is taken on the 23m line, in line with where it went off the back line.
- Feel: repeated practice of set plays improves confidence in a game.
- Connect: taking turns helps develop teamwork by ensuring players understand each other’s movements and responsibilities.
Keywords
Penalty corner - awarded for a defender's foul inside D, where the attacking team has a chance to score from the baseline
Long corner - taken by the attackers from the 23m line, in line where it went off the back line, having last touched a defender.
Auto pass - a player self-passes the ball from a free hit instead of passing to a teammate, usually for a faster restart
Common misconception
Long corners are actually taken from the corner of the pitch.
Long corners are taken on the 23m line, in line with where the ball went out. They used to be taken from the corners, but the rule changed in 2015.
Teacher tip
You may wish to mix and match these learning cycles with other lessons, such as saving the ball as a goalkeeper from lesson 4. Make sure if students are defending a short corner they wear appropriate protective face guards and goalkeeper equipment.
