Organise a tournament
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can organise and help run a Korfball tournament.
Key learning points
- Move: quickly spreading out after the throw-off to move into space creates passing options to start an effective attack.
- Think: knowing how to implement tactics within a variety of competition formats requires effect decision making.
- Feel: striving to be the best version of yourself both on and off the field shows integrity and self-discipline.
- Connect: decisions made by referees and officials should be accepted without protest even when you disagree.
Keywords
Round-robin - every team plays every other participant in turn
Throw-off - the game starts with a throw-off from the centre of the court and this also happens after each goal
Penalty shot - awarded for major infringements, e.g. illegal defence, and is taken from a designated spot 2.5 metres in front of the Korf
Common misconception
Pupils think that a knock out tournament is always the best type of tournament to do in sport/ PE.
With 4 or less teams (or if you have a lot of time) a round-robin tournament is better so that all teams are able to play each other.
Teacher tip
You may wish to organise the teams to ensure that the dynamics of the class are catered for so there is no disruption or anyone feeling overwhelmed or left out.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
