Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: throwing the baton underarm so it spins end-over-end increases the chances of successful strikes.
  2. Think: understanding how to hit another Kubb when throwing back those knocked over by your opposition is an advantage.
  3. Feel: visualisation and deep breathing are effective strategies to mentally prepare and reduce anxiety.
  4. Connect: mutual respect among team members creates a positive atmosphere and encourages cooperation and enjoyment.

Keywords

  • Toss line - The line behind which players must stand when throwing their batons. This line marks the boundary for legal throws during the game

  • Field Kubb - Kubbs that have been knocked down are thrown back into the opponent's half of the pitch and set upright. These must be toppled before any remaining baseline Kubbs can be targeted

  • Mutual respect - the recognition and appreciation of each other's rights, values and boundaries. It involves treating others with dignity, understanding, fairness, fostering trust and positive relationships

Common misconception

Exclusive focus on winning limits satisfaction and enjoyment.

Games like Kubb should be as much about the enjoyable social experience and finding ways to support each other as well as demonstrating honesty and fair play as winning the match.
