Changing context and worldviews in the UK
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can use census data to describe how worldviews vary according to geographical context in the UK.
Key learning points
- We can better understand worldviews in the UK by looking at context.
- Members of particular worldviews, such as Jews and Muslims, are found in particular areas due to history and culture.
- Using the census allows us to identify patterns about where people from particular worldviews live.
- We can find out more about why people choose to live where they do by interviewing case studies.
Keywords
Census - a national survey held every 10 years in England and Wales
Context - the situation, background or circumstances around something
Pattern - a repeated way something happens
Worldview - the way people see, interpret and inhabit the world
Common misconception
People from different worldviews are only found in certain places.
People from different worldviews can be found in a variety of different places. Some localities have historical populations of people from a particular worldview. But the census shows that people are moving to different areas as well.
Teacher tip
We use certain case studies in this lesson. But you might also like to use the census maps to begin to look at your own area. Manchester City Council website has interesting information on the growth of the Muslim community in Manchester that might help give extra context to this lesson.
