Why this why now
At Year 4, pupils are developing a stronger understanding of social issues and fairness. This unit builds on their Year 3 British values learning by deepening their understanding of equality and diversity. It introduces how the law protects people from discrimination and prepares pupils to recognise and challenge stereotypes and prejudice. This is particularly timely as pupils encounter diverse perspectives and may witness instances of discrimination.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils should know from earlier learning that people live in diverse communities and that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and fairness.
- Pupils should understand from earlier learning that rules and laws exist to help people live safely and fairly and that inclusion strengthens communities.
- Pupils may recall from Year 3 the fundamental British values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance, and understand their importance.
