      Our emotions toolkit: strong emotions

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe the differences between everyday emotions and stronger feelings.

      Key learning points

      1. We can feel emotions in different strengths.
      2. Strong feelings are when the emotion lasts longer or is more difficult to manage.
      3. Strong feelings happen when something affects us in a big way.
      4. Strong feelings are normal.
      5. Different people have strong feelings about different things.

      Keywords

      • Strong - when something or someone has power or force

      • Manage - in this context, to find good ways to handle big emotions without them taking over

      • Regulate - to notice your feelings and choose how to deal with them in a safe and helpful way

      Common misconception

Strong emotions mean you have poor mental health.

Strong emotions are very normal, and happen to many people. They are important because they tell us we need to pay attention to what is happening and make sure we take care of ourselves.

      Teacher tip

Encourage pupils to create a 'Feelings Journal'. Each day they can record how they feel using words or images, and the different ways they regulated their emotions.
