Why this why now
At Year 4, pupils may begin to experience puberty changes, which can start as early as eight years old. Building on previous understanding of bodies and emotions, this unit provides essential information about physical and emotional changes. This is particularly timely, as early preparation reduces anxiety and promotes a positive body image. By learning these concepts now, pupils develop a healthy perspective on development, understand that puberty is normal and natural and feel prepared about changes ahead, essential for their wellbeing during this transitional period.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils should know from Key Stage 1 the correct names for body parts including private parts such as penis, vulva and vagina.
- Pupils should understand that their body belongs to them and that all parts of the body are private and should be treated with respect.
- Pupils should be familiar with taking care of their body through good hygiene, healthy eating and regular exercise to stay well and healthy.
- Pupils should know from earlier learning that everyone grows and develops at different rates and that bodies change as people get older.
