Living things and movement

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can describe movement as something that all living things do.

Key learning points

  1. Everything in the world can be classified into living or non-living.
  2. A living thing is something that is alive and needs food, water and air.
  3. All living things share certain characteristics in common called life processes.
  4. Living things can move by themselves to achieve a goal, and this is a sign of life.

Keywords

  • Living thing - Something that is living is alive. It can grow, reproduce, move, feed and get rid of waste material.

  • Life processes - These are the processes or actions that all living things do.

  • Move - To change position or to go from one place to another.

  • Alive - Living things are alive. They move, respire, sense, grow, reproduce, excrete waste material and need nutrients.

Common misconception

Plants do not move because we cannot see them move. All things that move are alive.

Examples of how plants move very slowly (e.g. sunflower following sun throughout the day). Examples of things like wind-up or battery operated toys that move but are not alive.

Teacher tip

Find time lapse videos that show plants moving to demonstrate to the pupils that they are moving, even if it is so slow that we cannot see it.

Equipment

None required.
