      Naming and grouping familiar animals

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can name and group animals that can be kept as pets.

      Key learning points

      1. Animals are living things. They can move around and feed themselves by eating plants or other animals.
      2. Different animals have different names. Some animals are more familiar to us than others.
      3. Some animals are kept in the home as pets and looked after by humans.
      4. Wild animals should not be kept as pets, they live freely in the wild and find their own food, water and shelter.
      5. Familiar animals can be compared, sorted and grouped into pets and not pets.

      Keywords

      • Animals - Animals are living things that can move and eat other animals or plants.

      • Familiar - If something is familiar, it is well known to you.

      • Pets - Pets are animals that can be kept at home and looked after by humans.

      • Wild animal - A wild animal lives freely and finds their own food, water and shelter.

      • Group - To group things is to put similar things together.

      Common misconception

Pupils may think that only four-legged mammals that are pets, are animals.

Discuss a range of familiar animals that can be kept as pets that are not just four-legged.

      Teacher tip

Ask pupils to bring in a photo of any pets they have at home. These can be used to support the discussion of which animals can be kept as pets. This lesson contains a diagnostic question on slides 7 & 8 - see additional materials for further guidance.

      Equipment

The animal images may be cut from the worksheet to complete the sorting activitiy using hoops.
