Key learning points

  1. The sound-spelling correspondences [n] and [ñ] are pronounced differently.
  2. 'Hay' means there is or there are depending on whether it's followed by a singular or plural noun. 'Tiene' means it has.
  3. Adjectives agree with the number and gender of the noun.
  4. In Spanish, to say there isn’t or there aren’t, use 'no' before the verb 'hay'. This makes it a negative.
  5. The numbers 1-31 can be used in Spanish with 'hay' or 'tiene' to say how many of something there are or something has.

Keywords

  • Hay - verb meaning 'there is' or 'there are' depending on whether it is before a singular or plural noun

  • Tiene - 'it has', part of the verb 'tener' meaning 'to have, having'

  • No - word used before a verb to make a statement or a question negative

Common misconception

To form a negative in Spanish, you need to translate the word 'any' in plural sentences as well as making the verb negative, as in 'there are not any beaches'.

There is no Spanish word for 'any' in plural sentences. The word 'no' is used before the verb to form a negative.
