Key learning points

  1. Applying the two rules about final syllable stress enables correct use of accents when transcribing.
  2. Listening to familiar language in new contexts and transcribing it deepens vocabulary knowledge.
  3. 'Hacer', irregular in its I form ‘hago’, is regular in other forms. We do, make is ‘hacemos’, they do, make is ‘hacen’.
  4. Spanish subject pronouns add emphasis or clarity, e.g. nosotros hacemos los deberes, mientras que ellas hacen deporte.
  5. ‘We’ is nosotros for boys/men or mixed gender groups, nosotras for girls/women; ‘they’ also has two forms, ellos, ellas.

Keywords

  • Final syllable stress - pronouncing the final syllable more heavily than other syllables in a word

  • Hacer - Spanish verb meaning 'to do, doing' or to make, making'

  • Subject pronoun - represents the person, people or thing(s) doing the verb e.g. 'I', 'we', 'they'

Common misconception

There is just one word for ‘we’ and one word for ‘they’ in Spanish.

Spanish has two words each for ‘we’ and ‘they’. The plural pronoun ‘we’ is ‘nosotros’ for boys/men or mixed gender groups, ‘nosotras’ for girls/women; ‘they’ also has two forms, 'ellos' and 'ellas'.

There are many ways to make listening less daunting, including: making it a pair activity (listen out for odd and even item numbers, then pair-share answers); encouraging silent rehearsal of the word or sentence heard to keep it longer in mind and allow time to process and understand the message.
