﻿Hi, I'm really looking forward to our lesson today. I hope you are too. Before we get started, this is just a little reminder. We're here to support any approaches you might already be using and any work you might have already been set. We know that this lesson is going to be going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure about anything or have any questions, then please do contact your usual therapy beauty. Hi, so one of our EDLs is grooming. And today we're going to look a little bit more at that and how we can become more independent at doing things such as cutting our nails. Okay. Why is grooming important? Why is it important for us to be able to do the little extras on our bodies? Well, it helps keep us healthy. It's pretty important to be clean. We all going to have to be able to do our own grooming if we want to be independent and it teaches us good habits. Personal grooming tasks include finger and toenail care. So clipping your fingers, your fingernails, filing them and cleaning your nails, cleaning your teeth twice a day, including flossing, using hygiene products, such as deodorant or sanitary ware and facial skincare. So this might include moisturising and using acne products. Pause the video now to get the items you will need. And for today, there's going to be paper and a pen or pencil restart once you're done. Okay, let's start with finger and toe nail care. It's quite important that you keep your nails short and clean. It's also much more comfortable to cut your own nails. Okay. Ask an adult to show you all the steps. Another way that's quite easy to keep your nails short is by filing them quite regularly. And it's really important to try out some different nail files and find the one that works for you. Some of them might feel a bit uncomfortable. So just try out a range. If you find that filing your nails feels a little bit odd, then what you can do is doing some finger squeezes before you start. And that's the same for letting your... Just before you cut your nails also, okay. So you can do finger squeezes, and this is just really to prepare your hands, or you could even just squeeze the individual nails. Okay? And that deep pressure that you're putting on there is going to be really organising and make it feel much more comfortable. Don't let your nails get too long or when you do file them or cut them, it will be really uncomfortable. Okay? Also try and cut your fingers and your fingernails and your toenails after you've had a bath or shower. So they're soft and that will make it a little bit more comfortable as well. The next activity, I want you to ask an adult to help you with the following. Firstly, find some suitable nail clippers that you are able to use yourself, ask an adult to show you step by step, how to trim your own nails. Okay? Everyone's nails grows differently and some of them might grow up square, some of them might be round. So it's much easier if you get someone to show you on your own nails. And remember, if your nails are sensitive, try and do those fingertip massages I showed just a minute ago. Then ask an adult to help you get a nail file and to show you how to file your own nails. And this is something that I find that feels much better and much more comfortable when you do it yourself. Pause the video there to complete your task. Resume once you're finished. Next, let's talk about cleaning our teeth. But why is this so important? And you know, how much do you have to do it? Well, you should really clean your teeth at least twice a day. And you should really floss your teeth at least once a day, because what will happen when you don't clean your teeth? Well, you could get toothache. And that really is not very nice. And that will mean the one of your teeth has started becoming a bit rotten. Okay. You could have smelly breath. And that means that your friends weren't want to stand too close to you. You could have really sensitive teeth, which means that when you drink something hot or cold it really hurts. Yeah. You could have a dry math, so your mouth will just feel funny and furry, which is a bit yuck. And you could also have bleeding gums. So when you brush your teeth and you spit out, you could see that the foam is red or a bit brown, and these are all things we want to avoid. Flossing is really important. And I'm not talking about the little dance that you do. Okay. So flossing is super important and there are a range of tools out there, not to help you do it more easily. Okay. Do you have any problems? And what I want you to do for this activity is chat with an adult and make a list of the following. The number of times that you've brushed your teeth each day, do you think it's enough? Do you struggle to brush your teeth and which part of brushing your teeth do you struggle with? Is it holding the toothbrush as it getting to the back? Is it being able to hold your toothbrush for long enough? Or does your arm get tired? Do you struggle brushing the insides of your teeth? The top parts of your teeth? So have a really good think. And what you might do is go and actually brush your teeth and see where is that you struggle. Have a think about whether you have toothache. Do you have bad breath? You can ask an adult to just smell your breath or you can go and then smell. Okay? Do you have sore teeth or do your teeth bleed when you brush them? Do you floss every day? Do you know how to floss your teeth and which bits of flossing your teeth do you struggle with? Okay. So once you're done, you can make a plan to get better or to get help with all the bits that you struggle with. Pause the video there to complete your task. Resume once you're finished. Next, let's talk about deodorant. Okay? And after a certain age, when we reach puberty, we start smelling a little bit. Okay. And sometimes it can even be before then. And it's a really good idea to use deodorant. So the different types of deodorants that you can get, you can get the spray type or you can get the ones that roll either had the little ball or it's just a stick of deodorant that you use. So some tips for applying spray deodorant, if you're going to use antiperspirant deodorant, then you should use two strokes up and two strokes down and always apply to clean dry skin, and antiperspirant it's a good idea to apply it before bedtime. Okay. And this will mean that it allows the deodorant to set completely. And if it's done correctly, it should keep you dry for a full 24 hours. Okay? If you want to use just normal spray deodorant, shake the deodorant can first then hold it a few inches. Say about that far away from your armpit and coat each underarm with a layer of spray. Spray for about two seconds. When you are applying some roll-on or stick deodorant, for the roll on, so that's one of the little ball you going to shake it a few times, and then you're going to roll the ball under each of you under arms a few times and make sure that you cover the whole of your under arms so that every body is covered. And again, always apply it to clean dry skin and allow it to get dry or to sit for a few minutes before getting dressed. When you want to apply stick deodorant, you're going to apply two to three strokes of that deodorant again to clean dry skin, start in the middle of your armpit and work your way outwards in all directions until your whole armpit is completely covered reapply throughout the day as needed. Now I want you to sit and chat with an adult and discuss the following. Do you find that you are more smelly on certain days? So it might be that there's some days when you have PE or games and you find that in the afternoon you smell a little bit more, what type of deodorant do you prefer? Sometimes the spray can be a little bit hard for some of us. Do you struggle to apply your deodorant and which bit is it that you struggling with? Is it that you are struggling to press it down so it sprays or are you struggling to apply it evenly all over? Okay. And then have a think about whether you are able to carry a small bottle of deodorant with you all day, to keep it in your bag, which will mean that you can just reapply very quickly after sports, if you can't have a shower or after a long walk. Pause the video now to complete your task. Restart once you're ready. Okay. So why is it important for us to wash our faces? Well, if you don't wash your face twice a day, your skin could get quite a few breakouts, so a lot or little spots and pimples, and that will be due to all the oil building up just the dirt from the environment. Or if you wear a little bit of makeup, it could be that the makeup is clogging up your pores. Okay? So you can wash your face with lukewarm water. You don't need soap or cleanser unless your face is very oily. Okay? And you could either just wet your hands and wipe your face that way. Or if you prefer to use a cloth, then you can wet the cloth and then wipe your whole face. Okay? You just pat your face dry with a towel. And if you'd like to, you can use a tiny bit of moisturiser, ask an adult what they think about this. Now, you can discuss with an adult, the following steps for face washing and think about which parts of face washing you might struggle with. Okay? It could be, that you struggle with the feel of water on your face. It could be that you struggle with the temperature of water. Okay? Talk to an adult about your skin type. Do you know whether your skin type is oily, if it's dry or if it's normal? Cause that will influence whether you need to use a certain cleanser or a little bit of soap. Okay? And if you do use soap, what type of soap do you use? And then have a think about whether your skin does get spots. When you think you find that there are more spots and whether you need some help with this. Pause the video to complete this task. Resume once you're finished. Okay. So there are some alternatives that we can try that will make things a little bit easier for you. So you can try a three sided toothbrush. If you finding that, it's just, you're just struggling, brushing your teeth and really making sure that you get all the sides of your teeth. You can look, ask an adult to look online for you and you can find a three-sided toothbrush. You can also get just a double-sided toothbrush. You could look at buying or using just a simple electric toothbrush. Okay? For flossing, you can either try the normal string or you can get this little tools which have a little floss on it. Okay. And that makes it a lot simpler. Ask an adult, to help find one that's going to work best for you. If you find that using a face cloth is a bit tricky, then you can use a hand-mit and these hand-mits just go onto your hand. And it means you don't have to worry about pinching the cloth. And if you find that using deodorant hurts or stings, then please tell an adult and they can help you to find something else that will be better for you. Remember, everyone is different. So find the grooming techniques that are going to work for you, and that you can do on your own. Do your grooming every day and it will become a habit.
