﻿Hi, I'm really looking forward to our lesson today. I hope you are, too. Before we get started, this is just a little reminder. We're here to support any approaches you might already be using, and any work you might have already been sent. We know that this lesson is going to be going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure about anything or have any questions, then please do contact your usual therapy team. Hi, today we're starting our module on executive functioning, and this really is just a fancy way of saying how well we can organise, plan, and then carry out an activity. So in today's lesson, let's see how well you think you're organised. What is executive functioning? Well, it is a way of saying how our brain helps us to manage ourselves. And it helps us to do things such as focus and pay attention on what we need to be and screen out anything that we don't need to be focusing on. It helps us remember important things. It helps us become a little bit more aware of our emotions and manage our emotions better. Our executive functions can help us to plan how to do something. And it also helps us to organise ourselves and our belongings, our stuff, our things. Why do we need to be organised? Well, if you're organised, that means that you can look after yourself. You can keep track of all of your things, and that means you won't lose things. It means that we will do things on time and we won't be late. And when we become more organised, we don't make the same mistakes over and over. Pause the video now for the items that you will need today. And these are simply paper and a pen or pencil. Restart when you're ready. For our first activity, I want you to spend some time with an adult or your carer and ask them what they think you struggle with. Okay? See if they think that you sometimes do things without thinking it through, if you sometimes rush and make mistakes. Do they think you get frustrated and struggle to control your feelings and emotions? Do you sometimes push or hit others? What about homework? Do you sometimes forget to do homework? Do you lose things like your clothes or your pencils or your water bottle? Do you forget to do things? And do you sometimes struggle with homework or going to school? Pause the video now to do that task. Restart once you're finished. Okay, for the next activity, I want you to sit with an adult, but this time, I want you to think about what you think you need help with, okay, and let's look at three areas. So do you need help with anything before school, such as getting dressed, leaving the house on time, packing your bag? Do you need help during school, following instructions, maybe, paying attention, holding onto all of your things, maybe making notes? Do you maybe struggle with playtime? And after school, do you think you have difficulties getting changed, keeping your room tidy, starting your homework and staying focused? Pause the video now to think about times that you may need help. Restart once you're finished. For next time, I want you to start thinking about your routines and what you need to remember for each part of that routine. For example, what do you need to do your homework? Or what do you need to get ready for PE or games? And I want you to make a list of at least three things where you need to be organised.
