﻿Hello, everyone, my name's Emma, and welcome to today's lesson. I'm looking forward to today's session and I hope you are too. I can't wait to get started. But before we do, just a quick reminder. We here at Oak are here to support any approaches that you might already be using and any work you might have already been set. We know this lesson is going out to so many different children and families, so if you're not sure or have any questions, please do contact your child's school or usual speech and language therapy team. In today's session, we're continuing to think about developing doing words. I'm going to be sharing some more ideas for how you can develop your doing word vocabulary at home, and we'll also be doing some action activities. Throughout all of the activities today, I'll also be sharing some tips for adults so that they can help you to develop your use of language. For today's session, you'll need some pictures. Adults, you'll also need some writing equipment and the downloadable resource that's available on the Oak website with this lesson. So before we begin, find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed for the lesson, turn off any distractions or notifications that you might have running on your device, and then make sure that you and your adult are both seated comfortably. When you're ready, let's begin. Okay, let's start by talking and thinking about more ideas for developing your doing words. As we know, children learn words by hearing adults model them in lots of different situations so they can build up a consistent understanding. Children need to understand words before they can begin to use them. And verbs are that little bit harder to learn and understand because they're not as concrete as nouns. Verbs are really important for language though because they signify the child beginning to be able to understand and use sentences. So pause the video here and think about the doing words that you modelled through the activities in the last lesson. If you didn't complete lesson 6, that's fine. You might want to take the opportunity now to go back to it just to catch yourself up to speed and then come back to this lesson once you completed it. Okay, when you're ready, let's begin. So it's time for our first activity. It's called Verbs in action! Children, I'm going to show you some pictures and I want you and your adult to talk about the action that's happening in them. What can you see? Adults, use whatever strategies are appropriate to scaffold your child to experience success in this activity, that might even include modelling the answers yourself. If you need to, you could also try acting out the words at home. Pause the video to talk about this picture. Now's the chance to pause the video and gather up some of your own pictures at home. This could be pictures from a photo album on your phone or even from a magazine. Let's get talking about what we can see is happening in each picture. Let's label the action word. Although verbs aren't as concrete as nouns, they do come with actions or doing parts which make them really interactive, and we can turn them into lots of fun activities to help them stick for the child. Whenever we're introducing or modelling a noun, we can be showing it, and that's really important. And remember, the more we're modelling and the more reinforcement the child is getting with gestures, symbols, and pictures to remind them of the words, the more likely they are to understand it and therefore be able to use it. So, as we know, it's important to start simple and make sure that everybody who's working with the child knows the verb that you're targeting and using to support the child to understand. Make sure that verbs are being repeated in as many different situations as possible in the most consistent way. And ensure that you've got symbols or pictures to reinforce the words that you're using when you're using them. So now it's time for an activity. Children, we're going to take some pictures of you carrying out as many different actions as we possibly can. This could be running, jumping, skipping. It could even be lifting, carrying, whatever words you and your adult feel are most appropriate. Children love talking about photos of themselves, so this will be a fantastic activity, I guarantee you. You could even create videos. Talk about the actions that your child is completing after you've taken your pictures and when you're looking back through them again. Label the action with a word and a symbol, and then you can use these to go back over your verbs at another time. When you've completed as many of these picture cards as you possibly can, come back to the video and press play to finish the lesson. Remember, we want to create a language rich environment for our children where they're accessing words in as much fun, natural opportunities as possible. Words that a reinforced through multisensory approach, when they're modelled are much more likely to stick so create as many opportunities for talking, naming, commenting on actions, and then looking at pictures or symbols to reinforce these words as possible. Try and have as much fun as you can with your action words. Well, that brings us to the end of today's lesson.
