﻿Hello everybody. My name's Emma. And welcome to today's lesson. I'm looking forward to today's session and I hope you are too. I can't wait to get started. But before we do, just a quick reminder. We here at Oak are here to support any approaches you might already be using and any work you might have already been set. We know this lesson is going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure or have any questions, please do contact your child's school or usual speech and language therapy team. In today's session, we're finishing off module five by using our language to solve another fun problem. Throughout today's lesson, we're going to be working on explaining our decisions and predictions. And I'm going to be sharing some activities for you to complete at home. So before we begin, you're going to need one raw egg each. You'll also need a couple of boxes, some balloons, some plastic bags, some string, some tissue paper and any other materials that you think might be helpful in protecting your egg. So when you're ready, let's begin. As we know, we have been working on thinking and language throughout module five. Being able to use language to talk about why you've made a decision or how you're going to solve a problem is a really important life skill. In lesson 13, we started to solve some problems. You made a marshmallow tower and you began to plan something called your egg drop. You started to think about how you would protect your egg in a box if you dropped it from a height with a parachute. Today, we're going to continue with our egg parachute drop challenge. So pause the video here, to think back over or to plan how you're going to protect your egg when you drop it from a height with a parachute, Remember your egg will be in a box. So what else would you put in your box to help protect your egg? When you finished explaining how you're going to protect your egg, come back to the video and press play. In our challenge today, we're actually going to make two types of parachutes. One parachute will be a bag, ideally a plastic shopping bag. The second will be with one of our balloons. Here's a drawing of how our parachute will look with our shopping bag. You can see that I have tied two pieces of string to the handle of the bag so that the bag is now upside down. The string then connects to my box which has my egg and its various protection in the bottom. Here's a drawing of what my parachute will look like with a balloon. You can see that I tied one piece of string to the bottom of my balloon and this is then attached to the box with the egg. So pause the video here to have a think about what will happen to each of the eggs. What will happen to the egg that has a bag as a parachute and what will happen to the egg that has the building as a parachute? Do you think one of the parachutes will be better than the other? Maybe you can explain why you think that. When you finish, come back to the video and press play to continue. So now is the opportunity to complete your egg parachute drop in real life if you can. Now that you've completed your egg parachutes, I'd like you to think about these questions and explain your answers to your adult. So pause the video here to talk through these questions. Remember we want to create a language rich environment where children are accessing words in fun-filled and natural ways. By creating as many opportunities for explaining predictions and solutions to problems while having fun and we're creating language. I bet there are lots of other fun experiments that you can think of that would support you to explain, predict and problem solve. Well, that brings us to the end of today's lesson.
