I'm Miss Davies, and in this lesson we're going to be translating and describing the movement of an object in a horizontal and vertical direction.

Translating is the movement of an object.

It can go in any direction.

We're going to start by moving horizontally and vertically.

We're going to move or translate shape A five squares to the left and label it as B.

That has been moved five squares.

Let's label it as B.

We're now moving shape A three squares up and labelling it as C.

Finally, we're moving shape A six squares to the left and then four squares up and labelling this as D.

Make sure that the dimensions of the shapes stay the same.

They are only being moved.

We have been asked to describe the translation from shape R to shape S.

This is asking us how many squares across and up or down shape R has moved to be in the position of shape S? If we count from any of the vertices of shape R, we can see that we go across six squares to the right and two squares down.

What do you think the translation would be from shape S to shape R? It is six squares left and two squares up.
